PLC hardware for remote access

An industrial automation tool known as a PLC is used to automate processes in the production of energy, transportation, and goods. In a remote access situation, the PLC gear would be accessible from a distant location, frequently over the internet.

To enable remote access to PLC hardware, the following essential elements are required:

1. Communication Interface:

A hardware element known as a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) communication interface enables the PLC to link with other components of the industrial automation system. The communication interface might be a physical port or a built-in communication module that supports several communication protocols.

Using several communication protocols including Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, DeviceNet, and others, PLCs exchange data with other devices like Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), sensors, actuators, and other PLCs. These communication protocols specify the data format, communication scheduling, and device addressing used during data transmission and reception between devices.

On a PLC, physical communication interfaces including Ethernet connections, serial ports, USB ports, and wireless communication modules are a few examples. These interfaces can be used to establish a direct communication link between the PLC and other devices or to connect to a network.

PLC communication interfaces can be set up using either software provided by the PLC vendor or software from a third party. Configuration parameters include the network settings, data transmission format, communication protocol, and security options.

2. Router or VPN:

The Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) placed at the industrial site is connected securely to the distant user through the use of a router or virtual private network (VPN).

One networking tool that links one computer network to another is a router. Devices on local networks are regularly connected to the internet or another network using this method. Set up the router’s firewall to permit remote access after configuring it to accept incoming traffic on the PLC’s communication port.

A virtual private network, or VPN, uses a public network, such the internet, to safely link remote users to the private network. A VPN can provide a secure connection between the remote user and the PLC by encrypting the data sent between them. The VPN server must be set up to permit access to the PLC, and VPN client software must be installed on the remote user’s device in order to enable remote access to a PLC using VPN.

PLCs may be accessed remotely using both routers and VPNs, however VPNs are frequently more secure since they encrypt data exchanged between the remote user and the PLC. However, both options require careful configuration to ensure that remote access is safe and that only permitted users may access the PLC.

3. Firewall:

The firewall must be configured to permit incoming traffic on the PLC’s communication port while blocking all other incoming traffic in order to enable remote access to a PLC. To further increase the security of the PLC, the firewall can be configured to permit remote access only from a limited set of IP addresses or network ranges.

Physical objects, software programmes, or a combination of both can serve as firewalls. The firewall device’s maker may provide specialist software or a web-based interface for configuring them. The firewall settings on the PLC itself can also be configured using software tools that certain PLC manufacturers supply.

Securing remote access to a PLC requires proper firewall settings. The firewall must be set up to permit only approved remote access and to keep an eye on network traffic for possible security issues. To keep the PLC safe from emerging security threats, regular firewall software and hardware maintenance is also necessary.

4. Remote Access Software:

Users can connect to a computer or other device from a distance using remote access software, a sort of application. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) may be accessed remotely via remote access software, enabling operators and maintenance staff to keep an eye on and manage the PLC from any place with an internet connection.

There are many various types of remote access software programmes available, from open-source, free software to paid programmes with cutting-edge features and support choices. There is remote monitoring and diagnostics, data logging, and alarm alerting capabilities in certain remote access software that is particularly made for industrial automation applications.

The software must be installed on both the computer of the remote user and the computer or device that is linked to the PLC in order to connect through remote access to a PLC. The remote user and the PLC often exchange data via a communication protocol like Modbus, Ethernet/IP, or OPC when using remote access software.

5. PLC Programming Software:

PLC Programming Software is used by engineers and technicians to create and modify programmes for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). The programme is used to develop, test, and fix ladder logic or other types of computer code that are used to automate business processes.

To configure and programme PLCs, such as defining input/output (I/O) devices, setting communication protocols, and creating alarms and warnings, PLC Programming Software offers a graphical user interface. The programme allows users to create and edit logic diagrams, assign variables, and create PLC command sets.

PLC programming software is available in a range of flavours, from open-source, free software to paid solutions with extra features and support options. Some software is made to work with certain PLC brands or models, while other software is more versatile and can handle a variety of PLCs.
